Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Phu Quoc: Duration (3 nights)

Phu Quoc is a quaint island just south of the mainland of Vietnam. This was my first stop in Vietnam after leaving Cambodia and a destination to not be overlooked!

I arrived from Phom Pehn, Cambodia via bus, van, then eventually ferry which got me to my destination. (One Major tip: DO NOT FORGET YOUR VIETNAM VISA IN ADVANCE) If you read in my Vietnam blog you’ll see that 2 girls on my bus got denied at the boarder for not having their visa’s in advance. You can get visa’s online or at your hostel/hotels in whatever country you’re currently in. If you do it through an agency or hotel in Cambodia it is normal for them to keep your passport for a couple of days.

Once I arrived by ferry, a taxi took me to my hostel Phu House Hostel. Taxis from the airport to Long Beach and Sao Beach should not cost more that $15. The hostel was massive and relatively new looking or recently renovated (all info is based on my stay in 2017). They had both an upstairs and downstairs common areas that served food, a hottub on the roof, a pool table and a bar over looking the ocean and the city. The bunks were huge with curtains for privacy, lockers underneath the bunk, and personal lamps with outlets inside bunk area. Insane deal for the price ($11).

After arriving at my hostel I decided to go down to the night market just a few minutes away from my hostel via taxi. The night market was lined with street vendors, amazing food stalls/restaurants and of course the standard tourist souvenir shops. Definitely worth a night out for family, friends or solo.

Some great restaurants to try on the island include, The Night Market $, Bup Restaurant $, Bun Cha Ha Noi$ , Mango Bay Restaurant $$$+, The Spice House $$$+ .

Phu Quoc was very quiet during my stay so nightlife wasn’t really a huge thing there (2017). Unfortunately, I did go during monsoon season so I had more rainy days than sunny ones, but you can rent a motorbike for about $10+ for a day and explore the islands beautiful beaches. The most popular bar that I found was on the beach just a short walk from my hostel. Rory’s was the super laid back beach bar that seemed to be the place to be for sunset, dinner and drinks. Perfect place to kick back, relax and talk story over a few drinks. The Aussie owners were so welcoming and accomidating, who go out of their way to make you feel at home!

I found an absolutely stunning beach at the JW Marriott that I actually snuck into with a girl I met in my hostel that was also solo traveling. Absolutely stunning hotel, with multiple infinite pools, glamorous high end shopping centers and restuarants, and the most beautiful beach on the island. The water was covered in insane nine legged starfish, and the clearest waters. If you can, defintely attempt to stop and checkout this hotel, and if you have more than a couple extra dollars to spend, definitely treat yourself to a night here!

Phu Quoc was a beautiful island and is worth the visit! Make sure to not go during Monsoon Season as it does rain a serious amount.
