Freediving Bali

Freediving has become one of my favorite hobbies over the years while travel. There’s calming and therapeutic aspect to freediving that has helped me so much over the years. I was lucky enough to get my certification while I was in Bali a couple years ago at Fusion Freedive in Amed, about 3 hours from Denpasar International Airport.

I had the most amazing experience while getting my certification in Amed. My instructor Yanli was incredibly fun and patient, teaching me all the technical aspects of apnea training and freediving itself. Fusion offers a range of courses including Intro - Level 2 certifications, spearfishing and much more!

Amed is home to a thriving underwater world as well as a Japanese shipwreck. I was able to explore 2 different shipwrecks during my course.

Check out Fusion’s freediving course itinerary below:

Day 1:

  • Theory sessions: equipment, physiology, physics, diaphragmatic breathing, equalisation, safety and rescue

  • Breathing awareness and relaxation session

  • Dry breath hold practice

  • Lunch

  • Confined water session 1 – Static apnea, relaxation, buddying, safety and rescue practice

  • Confined water session 2 – Dynamic apnea with fins, body position, streamlining, finning technique, buddying, safety and rescue practice

Day 2:

  • Theory review: equalisation, body position, duck dives

  • Open water session 1 – free immersion dives, equalisation, body position, streamlining, duck dives, introduction to finning

  • Lunch

  • Written exam

  • Open water session 2 – Refining finning and deep diving, max depth attempts, rescue and safety skills

  • Summary

By the end of the course Yanli was able to get comfortably down to 20m (65 feet). We spent the next couple days doing fun dives and exploring the small town! Check out some of my favorite places to dive in Amed.

Snorkel/Dive Spots:

  • Jemeluk Bay snorkeling - Is home to the underwater temple in the photo above! I was able to see an array of fish during my visit as well as beautiful blue spotted rays and coral.

  • Lipah Beach snorkel spot - This is a super shallow snorkeling area with a thriving underwater world of reef and fish!

  • Kembali Beach Bungalows Reef - The best snorkeling spot on the island, find turtles, healthy reef and tons of fish. The water us usually calm with little to no current to okay for kids and beginners!

  • Bunutan – Selang Beach - Probably the most unknown snorkel spots which means less crowding when you’re trying to explore!

  • Japanese Amed shipwreck - For experienced swimmers, you’ll have to swim a ways out off the rocky beach. The wreck is pretty shallow which allows great water clarity during great weather. I’ve been a few times and my last visit there, the water was filled with trash, unfortunately pollution in Bali is a very real thing. Luckily a month after my visit in 2019 they banned all single used plastics!

If you’re in Bali and have ever wanted to learn how to freedive, I highly suggest checking out Fusion Freedive, they are perfect for all levels. They were absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to go back and dive with them again next time I’m in Bali!
